Dave Burnett (1985–2008)
David (“Dave”) Burnett was a towering presence in Jewish student life, whose leadership, warmth and vision continue to inspire a generation of young leaders.
A former AUJS NSW President and National Vice-President, Dave’s involvement extended far beyond our organisation, from Shalom College to the Sydney University Union and NSW Young Labor, his dedication to social justice, community, and leadership was unmatched.
Dave had just completed a BA (History) as part of his Arts/Law degree and was contemplating Honours when tragedy struck. In January 2008, shortly after leading a Birthright Israel tour as a volunteer madrich, Dave passed away in a tragic accident while visiting Petra, Jordan. He was just 22.
His passing left a deep and lasting impact on the AUJS community, the broader Jewish world, and the many people he inspired with his energy, compassion and drive.
In 2018, on the ten-year anniversary of his passing, AUJS students nominated Dave for Life Membership. This motion was unanimously passed and is now enshrined in the AUJS Constitution.
Continuing Dave’s legacy.
In the wake of his passing, the JCA established the Dave Burnett Leadership Fund to continue Dave’s legacy by supporting the next generation of young Jewish leaders.
Since 2009, the fund has granted over $150,000 to support AUJS programs and emerging leaders across the country, through scholarships for the AUJS Political Training Seminar (PTS) and the Leadership Development Program (LDP), as well as support for other programs.
Past recipients have gone on to lead AUJS, build community organisations, and contribute meaningfully to Jewish and public life.
Dave believed in leadership that was bold, inclusive, and future-focused. This fund is more than a tribute; it’s an engine for the values he championed, continuing to shape AUJS and the broader Jewish community for years to come.
